What Information you should Compulsorily Include in an obituary?

In general words, an obituary is a notice that informs about the death of a person and provides a brief description of that person. While creating an obituary, it is very necessary to choose your words carefully to convey the information. The information you are writing about the deceased person should be precise, expressing the loss of a loved one and the pain close relatives of the deceased have to bear.

The main purpose of an obituary is to clearly define the information about the deceased person, the pain, the feelings of sadness, and the arrangements of the funeral. So that all the relatives can reach the funeral at the right time.

The important things that you should compulsorily include in an obituary are:

  • The announcement to inform the relatives about the great loss.
  • A biography of the deceased person.
  • Information about the family of the deceased.
  • The information about the time and location of the funeral.
  • Photos of the deceased person.

Obituary Writing Guidelines:

A Captivating Title: This is as different and diverse as human minds and thoughts are. It can be something like: “In Loving Memory”, “A Life Well-spent”, “We love you but He loves you more”, “With a Painful but grateful heart to God”, or anything from your heart.

Full Name and Personal Details: It is necessary to include the full name and the personal details of the deceased after the general title. The personal details can be varied depending on the wish of the family, but the following are usually included:

His Traditional, Religious, Or Social Title: The date of birth and the age at death, the place of residence at death and the date, and place of birth (generally omitted), and sometimes the cause of death is also included.

Family Details: Name of surviving family members (siblings and specific members of the extended family), spouse, children, and grandchildren of the deceased.

The designation, award, and Other Recognition: The job title (i.e. Major General), awards (like national, club, and societal awards), special recognition and honor in the military from the government, and so on.

Special Achievements: This is where you include some of the outstanding things that the deceased had achieved while alive. For example, Nelson Mandela was a selfless leader who gave up not only his career and resources to see to the end of apathy in South Africa, but also gave up his freedom and family to ensure every black person in the country was truly free.

Hobbies and Interests: It is also good if a couple of things he loves to do are also mentioned. For instance, his support for endangered animals, his love for domesticated animals, and his passion for football.

Lastly, The Time and Place of Burial: More importantly, an Obituary Template should specify the place and the time the deceased will be buried inviting the general public to turn up and pay their last respect.

Though quite optional, an obituary could also include the name of the person making the announcement.
